Curriculum

Religious Education is central to all that we do at St Peter’s School. We want all of our children to learn about Christ and to follow his teachings. In line with our Catholic Values we make special provision and give tailored support to vulnerable pupils and those with Special Educational Needs. We actively support our pupil’s and staff with social and emotional well-being and mental health.

Each week one of our classes visit St Joseph’s Church to experience Holy Mass. We follow the Come and See curriculum scheme alongside Ten-Ten for RSE. (Detailed overview) St Peter’s is a multicultural school where people come from all parts of the world. Early reading is a crucial part of our curriculum and we want all pupils to be confident readers. We follow the Read Write Inc. scheme for phonics and all teachers are fully trained in the approach which is now well embedded following a year of intensive support from the English Hub.

It is our intent at St Peter’s for the pupils to recognise the importance of Science in our daily lives and to immerse themselves in all aspects of Science by providing stimulating and engaging learning activities. We embrace the 2014 national curriculum for science which aims to ensure that all pupils develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics.

Well-being is an important part of life in St Peter’s and we have a group of ‘Wellbeing Champions’ from across school, they work with Mrs Anderson to ensure everyone has a clear understanding of well- being and mental health. Mrs Anderson also leads ELSA sessions in school.

We are close to North Bay Beach; all of our classes take part in beach schools and make use of our amazing natural resource. We have a beach schools lead teacher who takes ownership of this area of the curriculum. Our children are passionate about caring for the environment and have elected Eco School Leaders who champion the cause of our environment.

To develop cultural capital we work alongside the amazing Steven Joseph Theatre to ensure that the arts are brought to life. We take part in regular workshops that are led by the SJT Team and our pupils visit the SJT to watch a show and take part in behind the scenes tours. A recent example of our partnership involved our Year 6 class completing a Shakespeare workshop that focused upon Macbeth and was shared on the Theatre’s website.

Pupils have many opportunities to develop their love of music at St Peter's. Each week a range of peripatetic music teachers visit the school to ensure that all pupilshave the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument. We follow the Charanga scheme of work in school during our music lessons. Miss Walker leads Choir Club and pupils are given a number of opportunities to sing in public when we visit church or perform for the residents of our local care homes.

Sport has a key place and we encourage all pupils to take part in a variety of sports and competitions. Each week we are supported by Robbie Hawks Sports Academy, along with our specialist basketball and cricket coaches. Staff follow the Real PE curriculum and all of our pupils enjoy keeping active. We all learn about keeping healthy and the importance of exercise for our mind and body.

Our History curriculum is localised where possible and we work alongside the Scarborough’s Museum Trust to bring teaching to life. We plan as many local visits as possible be this to the Roman excavation in Eastfield or Scarborough’s famous castle. Our Year 1 class work alongside a local palaeontologist each year to transform our school hall into a Dinosaur Museum.

The Geography curriculum at St Peter’s is designed to build and continuously consolidate children’s geographical knowledge and skills. Children are given the opportunity to study a range of topics, both inside and outside of the classroom. Our geography curriculum is heavily supported by the work of our Beach School lead. St Peter’s high expectations of learning allow children to learn at a deeper level which gives children the best opportunities to explore the relationships between people and place.

Art: Through our Kapow Art and Design scheme of work we aim to inspire our pupils and develop their confidence to experiment and invent their own works of art. It is designed to give pupils every opportunity to develop their ability, nurture their talent and interests and express their ideas and thoughts about the world. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

Our Design Technology curriculum encourages all pupils to use their creativity and imagination, to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values.

French: we are very fortunate to have Madame Moran a French national as part of our teaching staff at St Peter’s. Each week all of our pupils are taught French by Madame Moran. Once again, our locality features heavily as one of our local villages is paired with Pornic in France. The visitors from Pornic are always invited into our school to share their language and culture with us.

In Computing and ICT, we follow the Teach Computing curriculum and our children all enjoy using crumble and taking part in our coding club at lunchtimes! We are confident that our students will use their computing skills to great effect in their future careers
